Who are the Coaches at The Homeschool Graduate?

Beth McCarter is the primary coach at The Homeschool Graduate.

Her extensive experience in homeschooling, her teaching certifications, along with her dedication to inclusivity and anti-discrimination, make her a valuable resource for parents seeking homeschool coaching services.

What are your qualifications to be a homeschool coach?

Beth McCarter is a second generation homeschooler. She was homeschooled as a child for the majority of her grade school education. After having her own children, she is now homeschooling them making her one of the only second generation homeschoolers in the world. She has nearly 30 years of homeschool experience altogether.

She is also a certified teacher, with advanced certifications in Special Education, Spanish, bilingual education, English as a second language, and more. Additionally, she has spent several years teaching adults at her local community college. Combined, she has spent over 12 years working in the classroom.

Are you certified to be a homeschool coach?

No, Beth McCarter is not certified to be a homeschool coach – because there are NO certification programs specifically for homeschool coaches.

Any company that claims their homeschool coaches are certified is being misleading. They may be certified in something, but as there is no certification process for homeschool coaches, there is no such thing as a certified homeschool coach.

On the other hand, Beth McCarter is one of the few homeschool coaches who is a certified teacher. She is qualified to teach general ed as well as special education. There are not many homeschool coaches out there who have active and current teaching certifications.

Why Talk to a Homeschool Coach, Anyway?

Talking to a homeschool coach can be really helpful. Homeschool experts can help parents transition from public school to homeschooling smoothly. They can offer guidance on curriculum selection, teaching strategies, and legal requirements, ensuring that parents have the tools and information needed to provide a high-quality education.

Additionally, the right homeschool expert can tailor their advice to meet the specific needs of each family, addressing challenges, and offering personalized solutions. They also help parents stay updated on educational trends, resources, and best practices, ultimately fostering a positive and effective homeschooling environment.

When you’re new to homeschooling, consulting with a homeschool expert can help you achieve your educational goals and create a fulfilling learning experience for your child.

Here’s how Homeschool Coaching Generally Works

Homeschool coaching typically involves working with a homeschooling expert who provides guidance, support, and resources to parents who are new to homeschooling their children.

  1. Getting to Know You: During this phase, the coach gets to know the parents, their children, and their homeschooling goals and values. This assessment helps the coach tailor their guidance to the specific needs and preferences of the family.
  2. Legal Requirements: For families new to homeschooling, coaches guide parents through the legal requirements and regulations related to homeschooling in their region. They ensure that families understand and comply with all necessary documentation and reporting.
  3. Setting Educational Goals: Coaches work with parents to establish clear educational goals and objectives for their children. They help parents create a plan that outlines what subjects will be taught, how progress will be measured, and how long the homeschooling journey will last.
  4. Curriculum and Planning: Homeschool coaches assist parents in selecting or customizing a curriculum that aligns with their educational philosophy and their child’s learning style. They may recommend textbooks, online courses, educational materials, and other resources that suit the family’s needs.
  5. Teaching Strategies: Coaches provide advice on effective teaching strategies and methods that promote engagement and critical thinking in children. They may offer tips on creating a stimulating learning environment at home and adapting teaching techniques to suit the child’s age and developmental stage.
  6. Progress Monitoring: Coaches can show parents how to monitor their child’s progress and make adjustments to the homeschooling plan as needed. They offer strategies for assessing learning outcomes and identifying areas where additional support may be required.
  7. Resource Recommendations: Homeschool coaches often provide recommendations for educational resources, including books, websites, educational games, and local support groups. They help families tap into valuable educational networks and communities.
  8. Emotional Support: Homeschooling can sometimes be challenging, and coaches provide emotional support to parents. They offer encouragement, share experiences, and help parents navigate any doubts or difficulties they may encounter along the way.

Homeschool coaching is especially valuable for new homeschooling families. It provides a structured and personalized approach to homeschooling, ensuring that parents have the tools and knowledge they need to provide a high-quality education for their children while also fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

How do I get started with a homeschool coach?

If you’ve decided that you’d like to meet with a homeschool coach, here are the next steps:

1. Identify Your Needs and Goals:

  • Before you begin searching for a homeschool coach, take some time to clarify your needs and goals for homeschooling. What are your educational objectives for your child? What challenges or concerns do you have? Knowing what you’re looking to achieve will help you find a coach who can address your specific needs.

2. Check Qualifications and Experience:

  • Review the qualifications and experience of potential coaches. You’ll want someone who has both experience and education credentials, like Beth McCarter, the founder of The Homeschool Graduate, who is a 2nd generation homeschooler and certified teacher.

3. Evaluate Compatibility:

  • Assess whether you feel comfortable and confident working with the coach. Consider whether the coach’s approach aligns with your values and goals for homeschooling.
  • Look for coaches who align with your educational philosophy and values. This is important because a lot of homeschool coaches have theological beliefs that are not a good fit for every family.

4. Schedule Coaching Sessions:

  • Arrange coaching sessions with your chosen coach according to a schedule that works for both of you.

5. Commit to the Process:

  • Commit to actively participating in the coaching process. Be open to feedback, implement the coach’s recommendations, and communicate any concerns or challenges that arise during your homeschooling journey.

Getting started with a homeschool coach can provide valuable support and guidance as you embark on or continue your homeschooling journey. Remember that the coaching relationship should be a collaborative one, with both you and the coach working together to create a positive and successful homeschooling experience for your child.
